Unfortunately, it's a part of life. Others can
be cruel when you have overly prominent features such
as ears, arms, or feet. And while we may think that
only children get teased, it's not always the case.
And even if you're no longer being teased, the emotional
scars can last a lifetime.
Ear surgery or otoplasty resets prominent ears closer to the
head and defines the inner ear fold to create a more natural
look. Dr. Norman Markus also corrects conditions such as “lop
ear” (when the upper ear folds down and forward), “cupped ear” (an
extremely small ear), and “shell ear” (when outer rim curves
or natural folds and creases are missing). Ear surgery can even
repair or replace ears. While ear surgery can't guarantee that
you'll never be teased, it can ensure that you won't hear anything
bad about your ears.
Ear Surgery. Ear surgery basically reshapes
ear cartilage and uses permanent sutures to hold the ear in
place. The cartilage itself is not cut, so there are no sharp
points, and the permanent sutures reposition the ear into a
more natural looking position. How Dr. Norman Markus performs
your ear surgery will depend on the condition he is correcting.
Ear surgery generally takes about 2 to 3 hours, though more
involved procedures may take longer.
Dr. Norman Markus will begin by making an incision on the back
surface of the ear where the ear meets the head. After exposing
the cartilage, he will sculpt it into the desired form and bend
it back toward the head. He will then secure the cartilage with
permanent sutures to maintain the ear's new shape and position.
Ear surgery will leave a faint scar on the back of the ear that
will fade with time.
