How long will the procedure take? The entire procedure
generally takes two to three hours.
When
can I return to work and normal activities? You
can begin to move around comfortably and return to non-strenuous
activities within 3 to 4 days after surgery. You must
avoid all heaving lifting or straining for several weeks.
Dr. Markus recommends that you do not drive for 7 to
10 days after surgery. Dr. Markus will advise you on
when you may return to your exercise program. In most
cases, this is about 4 to 6 weeks after surgery.
Are
breast implants safe? Yes. Dr. Markus uses only
saline-filled implants which is a silicone rubber shell
filled with sterile saltwater. In the unlikely event
that an implant ruptures, your body will absorb the
totally harmless saltwater.
Will
I need more than one treatment? You will probably
need future treatments because implants are not considered
lifetime devices. Many women may undergo implant removal
and probably replacement over the course of their lives.
Are
the results permanent? While the implants can be
removed, the changes to your breast are irreversible.
Once implants are removed, you may notice cosmetic changes
to the breast including dimpling, puckering, and wrinkling.
Do
implants affect mammograms? It is vital that you
inform your mammography technician of your implants.
After breast augmentation, routine mammography will
be more difficult, requiring additional views of each
breast (meaning the screening will take longer and you
will be exposed to more radiation). Also, because the
breast is squeezed during mammography, it is possible
for an implant to rupture during the procedure.
Will
I still be able to perform my monthly breast self-examination?
Absolutely. Dr. Markus will help you learn to distinguish
between the implant and your natural breast tissue.
