Below are some guidelines for what you can expect after surgery. While every patient is different, these are the most common post-surgical recommendations. If you have questions at any time, please contact Dr. Markus's office. Your emotional and physical well being are our primary concern.

Immediately After Surgery

  • The period of greatest discomfort usually does not last more than one to two days-possibly less. You will be given pain medication to reduce and control this discomfort.
  • After surgery, expect to spend two to three days in bed with your legs bent at the hips and your back elevated to reduce abdominal strain.
  • Do not use the bathroom without assistance.
  • There will be some drainage from the incisions. Replace the drainage pads if they become wet.
  • You will have drainage tubes to prevent fluid from accumulating. A nurse will teach you how to manage the drains and how to empty them once you go home. At home, you will need to empty the drains every four hours (while awake) and record the amount of drainage.
  • You will leave with an abdominal binder to control swelling and assist healing. Dr. Markus will tell you how long you must wear it and whether it can be removed to bathe or sleep.
  • You will visit the office one to two days following your surgery at which time your dressing will be changed.

The Weeks Following Surgery

  • After the first three days, you will be able to spend more time up and about, engaging in some basic activities at home.
  • Be sure to rest and allow time for your complete recovery. You will tire more easily following surgery.
  • Do not drive for one week following surgery.
  • Do not life any heavy objects or strain yourself for several weeks after surgery.
  • Each person's healing time is different, but many patients find that they can return to work after two weeks. When you do return, remember you may tire easily so allow rest periods.
  • Dr. Markus will advise you when you may resume your exercise program.

Dr. Markus will remove your sutures in his office 7 to 10 days after surgery.
